Nigeria will be consumed if Nnamdi Kanu, the Radio Biafra director remains detained by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) despite court rulings, says Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC).
According to the OYC, it is shocking that four days after an Abuja High Court gave order for Kanu’s unconditional release, the authorities of DSS have continued to keep the Biafra leader in their custody.
The OYC strongly condemned the attitude of the DSS over the detained Biafran activist, stating that the detention is not in the best interest of the nation.
In a statement issued by the national president of OYC, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and secretary, Nnabuike Okwu, the group appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari, to prevail on the authorities of the DSS to free the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the interest of peace.
The OYC informed that, there are tendencies for Kanu’s loyalists, and Biafra agitators to renew deadlier protests capable of consuming Nigeria.
They stressed that a relapse of protests must be avoided, as it might be difficult to calm Igbo youths again.
According to the OYC the patience of the youths are wearing thin running over Kanu’s detention which they see unjust.
“President Buhari should help save the country from unnecessary tension by prevailing on the DSS to release Kanu since the courts have discharged and acquitted him.
“We know how much efforts it took us to prevail on IPOB and MASSOB members to stop their protests before the court ruling, and we don’t know what to tell them again as Kanu is still in detention four days after he was discharge by a court of competent jurisdiction,” OYC said.
The recent killing of jubilant pro-Biafra supporters, following the favourable judgement of Kanu, was sternly condemned by the OYC.
“The recent killings of IPOB and MASSOB members in Onitsha by security agents as they jubilated over the court order for his release was a tip on the ice bag of the agenda of our enemies to decimate Ndigbo on the excuse of quelling uprising. To be forewarned is to be fore armed,” the group stated.
Ohanaeze in their statement issued on Sunday, December 20, urged Biafra agitators and Igbo youths to remain calm as efforts were being intensified to secure freedom for Kanu.
“We call on all Igbo youths especially IPOB and MASSOB members as well as other Biafran agitators to resist the snare by the enemies of Ndigbo to again, turn Igbo soil into theatre of war.
“The destruction in the North East is what our enemies want to see happen in South East but we must collectively resist that. Some people are looking for an opportunity the likely protests that Kanu’s continued detention might spark to use war planes to send Ndigbo backwards again,” the statement read.
In conclusion, the OYC appealed to the international community that than coming with aids to refugee camps, they should make more efforts to intervene and save Nigeria from plunging into another avoidable ethnic fracas.
In a related development, Ohaneze Ndigbo has condemned the Biafra protest in Onitsha which led to the death of two police officers and nine protesters. They appealed to the protesters to becareful and not to allow their actions lead to something catastrophic.
