Witnesses says two police officers and a bystander
died in the latest protests over renewed demands for
a Biafran state to secede from the southeast.
Police Deputy Superintendent Ali Okechukwu said he has several
report that at least two officers were killed when
protesters opened fire Wednesday in Onitsha city of
Anambra state.
A leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Ugochukwu
Chinweuba, gave a similar account, saying police
opened fire and a bystander was killed. Chinweuba said
dozens of protesters were wounded, some critically.
He said the protest was disrupted by agitators who set
trucks ablaze and attacked police.
Police say more than 130 activists have been arrested
recently. One leader is charged with terrorism.
Biafra's separatist cause prompted a 1960s civil war that
killed 1 million people.
