The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday,
December 9, has alleged that some politicians and
groups planned to disrupt the existing peace witnessed in
Bayelsa state.
PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh
This allegation was made by the director of publicity of
Seriake Dickson Campaign Organisation, Jonathan
Obuebite. He said that the All Progressives Congress
members were preparing a violent protest in the state.
The Dickson’s campaign office and the PDP urged the
people of the state and businessmen to beware of the
protest as the alleged protesters had been given specific
instructions to unleash mayhem on the streets of
Yenagoa, the state capital, Vanguard reports.
The PDP counseled the people of the state to exercise
utmost precaution to steer clear of the protesters and
guard against any form of molestation adding that the
aim of the protest was to breach the existing peace in
the state.
It further stressed that the planners of the protest want
the APC-led federal government to declare a state-of-
emergency in the state that could make it impossible for
the Independent National Electoral Commission to hold
the rescheduled election in Southern Ijaw.
INEC had on Monday, December 7, cancelled the
elections in Southern Ijaw local government area and
base on that declared the Saturday governorship election
in the state inconclusive.
The party statement reads in part: “ We are calling on
Bayelsa people, particularly business and shop owners to
beware of these protests, as we have it on good authority
that the protesters have been instructed to unleash wanton
violence and mayhem on the streets of Yenagoa.
“The plan is under the guise of asking INEC to make haste
to declare their candidate as the winner of the Dec. 5
governorship election.
“As the protest is bound to get violent, Bayelsa people are
advised to take utmost precaution to steer clear of the
protesters and guard against any form of molestation .’’
The PDP called on security agencies to nib on the bud
the planned protest and urged INEC to declare Dickson
the winner of the gubernatorial election in the state
having won six out of the seven local government areas,
where elections had been held and results declared.
