The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)
may schedule the rerun poll for Southern Ijaw council for
December 19, Saturday.
The election was annulled after two attempts eight days
ago.
Guardian reports that while the resident electoral
commissioner Baritor Lenu Kpagih said that the final
decision on when to repeat cancelled election was with
the commission, the efforts were on top gear to enable
that the poll would not surpass the 14 days required by
the Electoral Act.
An insider within the Maitama head office of INEC
revealed that the electoral commission was considering
December 19 as the possible date for the rerun poll in the
troubled Southern Ijaw local government council.
He added that the inter-committee put together by the
INEC boss Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, was working
thoroughly to come up with a guaranteed strategy that
would ensure that poll materials would be taken to the
wards and polling units under maximum security so that
authorization and voting would take place simultaneously.
The national commission has annulled December 5-6
Bayelsa state governorship poll in Southern Ijaw local
government area — one of the state’s eight LGAs.
INEC said the decision was taken because of violence,
the abduction of electoral officials and ballot box
snatching.
The electoral commission decided on the annulment of
the votes briefly after two Toyota Hilux vehicles, carrying
24 ballot boxes and some men stormed the collation
centre in Yenagoa, causing a stir.
